“The U.S. Immigration System, a Retired Consular Officer’s Perspective”
This month’s guest speaker is Denise Knapp, a retired U.S. diplomat, who will give us an insider’s look at the U.S. immigration system and how it works in practice.
During her 23-year career with the U.S. Department of State, Denise spent much of her career as a consular officer at U.S. embassies and consulates around the world, helping Americans abroad and implementing U.S. immigration and nationality laws. She served in leadership positions in Mexico, South Sudan, Afghanistan, Saudi Arabia, Ireland, the Dominican Republic, and Washington, D.C., managing complex operations, leading multinational teams, and responding to humanitarian and security challenges.
Denise has extensive firsthand experience with the U.S. immigration system. While serving at the U.S. Consulate in Matamoros, Mexico, she worked directly on U.S.-Mexico border issues during both the Biden and first Trump administrations, giving her a bipartisan perspective on migration and border security. In Monterrey, Mexico, she managed the world’s largest temporary migrant worker visa program, and she later managed immigrant visa operations in Ireland and the Dominican Republic.
During her presentation, Denise will provide an easy-to-understand overview of the many ways people can legally come to the United States, both temporarily and permanently. She will discuss the various pathways to temporary and permanent residency and U.S. citizenship; and explain the complexities and pitfalls she has identified within our current system.
Whether you have questions about how someone can legally immigrate to the United States, want to better understand the immigration system beyond the headlines, or simply want to learn from someone who spent more than two decades working within it, this promises to be an informative talk.
